Reading time: 1.42 401 words Hey Reader, I’ve been fizzing with excitement for the past couple of days reading through the intake forms from K and K who have signed up to do MicroBook Magic. A HUGE welcome to my first MicroBook Magicians! I can’t wait to see your books take shape. Both their names start with a K but this is NOT a requirement if you would like to join us too. They both have big ideas for their micro but mighty books and they both have similar challenges — and I can’t wait to dig in. The very first thing I get you to do when you join is to think deeply about not just your idea and your reader and your goals, but how your idea fits into the wider world. That’s not always obvious on the surface; like — Oh, I want to write a book about the musical landscape of my local city. Maybe it’s a kind of travel book, a city tour. But then it emerges there’s a busking ban — and suddenly all sorts of tracks open up about censorship, about suppression of voices, about art as resistance and revolution. Or — Here is a book about self care. What it is and what it isn’t. But when you dig a little deeper into the wellness industry you start seeing how it’s not about wellness at all. It’s about control, and coercion, and — above all — money. Or — The book about clothes that is not about clothes at all. It’s about identity, patriarchy, control, and freedom. Or, sometimes, you just want to write a funny little book about frogs or corgis or a brief history of googly eyes and that’s okay too because it taps into joy and laughter and silliness and play. What’s your big idea? How long has it been marinating in your head? How much longer will you wait before you unleash it on the world? You could have your first draft done by the end of June. Your book published before Christmas. There are Just Make one of them yours — sign up here.

Reading time: 4.25 1,050 words Read this email in your browser Hey Reader, I’m gonna need a pinny, a handmade hazel basket, and a pilgrim bonnet. Plus ample tea and cake. Because when it comes to gardening your way out of existential dread, there is a GODDAM AESTHETIC AND I WANT IT. Look. I’m lucky enough to have vegetable beds...
