Two patterns I’ve noticed in my most successful authors (and one secret to their success)

Hey Reader,

➡️ 1. They allow (at least elements of) the writing process to be fun. Why so serious?

➡️ 2. They burrow through their discomfort and elbow their ego out of the way to get to the substance underneath.

People don’t want a surface level book; they want depth.

They don’t want our “ooh what will people think of me” prose; they want our down-and-dirty truths.

The secret?

🔥Write the stuff you’re not sure you ever want anyone to see🔥

because they never have to see it!

The act of pushing through that discomfort gets us to the other side of our fear of writing.

It helps us figure out what we truly think and feel and believe, and what our values are.

And what comes out of that is US.

Our voices.

We can take that stuff that can never be seen in public, and start to turn it into something we’re proud of — and that’s the fun part.

The bit where we get to unmask, undress, stop pretending, and it is LIBERATING.

Especially when you remember nobody else has to see it.

Getting there, though — that can be a PROCESS because we’re all so used to dampening ourselves down lest we be

too much

too loud

too rude

too vulnerable

too amateurish

too REAL

If you find yourself skating on the surface of ideas you KNOW are deeper than that, get some help!

It’s not always easy or possible to dig down there yourself.

So if you’ve tried and tried and it ain’t happening:

🤙🏼 call me

This is my forte.

There are two ways I can help you dig up the ideas that are going to change someone’s world (and your own) in July:

  1. A VIP Day: a full day with me to make thrilling progress on the book that’s stalled. This is for writers who are DONE with having a half-finished manuscript haunting them and ready to actually get this book finished.
  2. A Book Breakthrough: Unlocked session to finally get you started — and give you everything you need to actually write. This is for writers who are DONE with procrastination and ready to get their book out of their head and onto the page.

If you’d like to talk about these options, or enquire about my 3-month 1-1 coaching programme, reply to this email and we’ll book a chat!

TTFN,

Vicky 🫡

So when I went to gymnastics this week, my plan was mostly to stretch and not move around too much because that room was approximately the same temperature as the surface of the Sun. But I did want to do a couple of somersaults into the foam pit because I’d been away for a couple of weeks. You need to keep doing them otherwise it gets scary again. Taking a run-up...

(And letting go of that shame.) 😷 Swerving my business and going ALL IN on the thing that makes my heart sing… during a global pandemic. 💍 Saying YES to Joe after I’d already failed at marriage once. 👻 Saying YES to a client who asked if I could ghostwrite a book for them, when I had never done that before (and now it’s what I do!) 📚 Writing every...

I was about 14 years old, I guess, wearing my uniform of denim jacket, tassled skirt, purple Doc Martens, baggy top, and “am I doing this right” smile. I was also sporting the remnants of an unfortunate curly perm. GOD, WHAT WAS I THINKING! Then, as now, I was wishing for hair I did not have and would never be able to achieve. Some things never change. Other stuff does, though, like my...
