Reading time: 1.28 Hey Reader, I gaped, and then laughed, because this was a challenge I’d never heard before. And I thought I’d heard them all… One of my MicroBook Magic writers was nearing the end of her wrinting process and lamented that she’d found it really easy to write her MicroBook… and surely this was wrong? Surely she’d done something wrong, or bad, or missed the point. Because everywhere, as far as the eye can see, are posts and essays and talks and podcasts and entire books and movies about how tortuous the writing process is. About how damn difficult it is to write anything at all, let alone a book. About how we must suffer for our art. Ah, bless. We writers love a good old pity party. And, ya know, on occasion writing is tortuous and painful and grim. Most things are, sometimes. But I put this to the court: if writing is always tortuous and grim and a grind, then you’re definitely doing something wrong. Or maybe not wrong; perhaps you’re trying to fit your uniquely human-shaped self into a hole shaped like a “proper writer” that someone else made. Perhaps, just perhaps, writing doesn’t have to be that way. Perhaps, if you let yourself run free and be silly, you can find the joy in the practice more often than not. What do you think? I’m right about this, btw. It’s a hill I’ll fight and die on. More joy, in our work, in our lives, everywhere. It’s an act of rebellion and resistance in a world that wants us to sit the fck down and shut the fck up. If you’d like a little silliness in your writing practice, come and join me in the Find Your Funnybone workshop this Thursday at 11.15am. It’s only 45 minutes, you’ll learn three new techniques to help you be funny on paper, and you get time to workshop and get my eyeballs on your silly ideas. Best of all? It’s just £25 + VAT and you get the recording and the slides for everrrrr. Come and play:

(Yep I woke up and chose violence today and I AM NOT SORRY) The cognitive dissonance that comes from repeatedly vowing to do something but not doing it is painful. It makes a liar of us. For a lot of people (and myself on occasion) this is what a week looks like: 😀 Monday: Will work on my book today, but first I need to do more research between my other work. I’ll start...

(this isn’t a flex, promise) I took a massive scary leap and turned away from something people needed — sales copywriting — towards something nobody “needs” — writing a book. I kinda expected to last a month, then have to get a job picking fruit or stacking shelves or go back to being a cleaner again. But something weird and wonderful happened: people wanted to write. They...

Hey Reader, Caution: you may experience these side effects when you write your book: 🌤️ An increased sense of self 🗝️ Realising the true value you have to offer 👀 A new way of looking at the world ✨ Seeing — really seeing — your true skills, knowledge, and talent (May also cause giddiness, tears, laughter, rage, delight, and a propensity to panic-eat cheese.) And that’s just the side effects. Because you also get A BOOK. A real live book you...
