Imagine if we LISTENED to each other

Hey Reader,

Remember that time before we all sold our souls to the digital algorithms?

When you’d have to be where you said you’d be on time because you couldn’t text your mate to say you were running late?

(So in my case, I’d just be either 3 hours early or arriving 10 minutes late with my hair on fire)

Where if you disagreed with something in the papers you’d write a thoughtful response.

And if you disagreed with someone in person, you’d ask why they feel that way, or walk away, or present your argument or, on occasion, have a massive screaming match?

Where if we wanted to form an opinion on something, we’d read a book or have a lesson or ask people questions?

We had a different kind of algorithm. The original human algorithm (thanks for this idea Yinka).

Where we talked, in depth, with nuance, without screaming at each other (mostly).

Where we LISTENED.

Oh my god, where we listened to each other, even if we disagreed.

We read pamphlets longer than 200 words and then THOUGHT ABOUT THEM.

We read books. Imagine that.

Imagine what might happen if, instead of getting mad at the person who used the “wrong” word or has a different opinion on how to (for example) make a cup of tea, we tried to understand where they’re coming from and what they want to achieve.

And, maybe, if their end-game is similar to our end game, that perhaps we could work together, despite our smaller differences, and grow a little closer while we do it.

We can learn a more inclusive way to communicate, and maybe how to make a tastier cup of tea, and achieve world peace and capitalism-free green energy at the same time.

Maybe, just maybe, we can get back to that original human algorithm.

What do you think?

I say: bring back pamphlets and furtive resistance meetings in coffee shops and random lectures on the nature of newts!

And I say: do this through comedy, long-form content, thinking, listening, learning, offline conversations, community.

I further say: do all this starting with your book.

Because in a book, we have space and nuance to say, “This is how I experience the world. Maybe you recognise this, too?”

We have space and time to invite people into our worlds and show them our ideas. What we can offer them. What our brains look like.

And that space we create is an invitation for them to share their ideas, too.

Not shouting at each other from behind a computer screen, but approaching the world with curiosity and the will to make things kinder and safer for all of us.

Not only that — but an opportunity for you to step away from the algorithm that favours the techbros and shouters, and build a quiet relationship with someone who might turn out to be the perfect client for you. Over and over again.

Anyway — all this is why I created MicroBook Magic.

I know it might seem archaic, but mark my words, we HAVE to get back to something like what we were before everything went digital if we want to change things and if we want our businesses to thrive.

Not to abandon online, not at all. The internet has been an incredible force for good.

But to use online tools WITH books, pamphlets, magazines, in-person events, and offline conversations.

So we can build the kind of world we want to live in, and leave a hopeful legacy for the next generations.

I’m on a fucking MISSION, bro.

Come and write your book with me and CHANGE SOMETHING:

TTFN,

Vicky

They puncutate the landscape with their spiky limbs, giving walkers a semi-colon to rest in before we continue our meanders along the boundary between England and Wales. There are semi-wild Exmoor ponies up on the ridge too. They don’t let you get close enough to pet them (unless you’re a horse whisperer like my friend Darrien) but...

Well, if you’re talking about cleaning my toilets and doing admin, I’m fully on board with that. I’d rather be writing poetry, reading books, and going to the beach with my love than adulting. But writing? You’ve probably read a lot of boring drivel about AI over the past year or so. I know I have. So don’t worry, this isn’t another rant about fucking...
