Hey Reader,

For years I thought the lyrics were:

Your socks are on fire.

One of my faves is:

I’m sorry Miss Jackson
I am four eels
I never meant to make your daughter cry
I am just four fish and not a guy

I’m a notorious lyric-bungler and also a notorious maker-upper of alternative lyrics to well-known songs. You might think I’m singing the classic hymn All Things Bright and Beautiful as I stride over a Brecon Beacon, but if you listen closely you’ll hear something more like “I am fighting socks today, why do they hate me so? They’re much more wild than wonderful, they’re eating my big toe” so there’s that.

But I also use this notion as a creative play prompt and I’m sharing it with you today.

Start your week with a little silliness and get your brain playing with ideas.

Your creative prompt

Choose a song you enjoy (or one you hate!) Pick one verse or the chorus, and write new lyrics for it.

Maybe something to do with what you do for work.

Or just funny.

Or topical!

Don’t overthink it. It doesn’t have to be good. Nobody else has to see it. Allow yourself to be silly.

Here’s what I mean. Engage Fresh Prince mode…

This is a story all about how
Your words get flipped turned upside down
And I’d like to take a minute, just sit right there
I'll show you how to write funner than that AI user there.
In a field in Herefordshire, surrounded by sheep
In a spiderweb is where I spent most of my days
Reading, writing, messin’ about all cool
And all bustin up my grammar and breaking the rules
When a couple of tech bros who were up to no good
Started makin trouble in the art neighbourhood
I saw one too many word salads and pulled out my hair
And said it’s time to show these people how to write with flair

So, yeah. Have fun. And if you like this kind of thing, watch this space because I’m launching my Uncaged prompt adventure again soon!

TTFN,

Vicky 🫡

This morning’s “word of the day” was vocation and it got me thinking. I used to think my vocation was helping people to write books, and I still do think that. But this year has been so difficult, in terms of business (seriously, it’s been dire, and I know I’m not alone) it’s made me question everything. It’s part of the reason I’m training to be a...

Reading time: 5.08 1,219 words Read this email in your browser Hey Reader, Libraries are magical places. Not just because there’s a high concentration of books, stories, and accumulated wisdom that definitely warps space-time and creates a kind of vortex that gathers universes known and unknown in its embrace… But because librarians are the pathfinders who show us how to get into those unknown universes. Most of us, if left to our own devices, will settle into a comfortable little track and...

Ha. Who am I kidding? There are definitely not enough sequins in my wardrobe for that. Somehow, no matter how many lovely items of clothing I own, I never seem to have anything to wear. The Correct Outfit eludes me every...
